Foppe de Haan: "I thought it was
all over"
Sunday 10 August 2008
"I thought it was all over,"
Foppe de Haan said about the last few minutes of the
game with his team being 2-1 gown and virtually out
of the Olympic football tournament.
"When we got that free kick
I thought if Sibon takes it we might have a chance.
He has done this before, you know."
And Sibon did it again.
"It was in the dying seconds.
Just for that we should be happy."
The Dutch coach had been happy
with the first 30 minutes of his team.
"Then we played great. Well
done! We created a lot of chances though not every cross
was good. Then they changed their approach and we had
trouble reacting to that. We fell back way too much
and lost our heads a bit really."
"The way we play is a bit
naive at times. When you look at the way we sometimes
gave the ball away... You can not do that against these
kind of guys. They smell you're in trouble."
De Haan still sees plenty of chances
for his team.
"We simply need some time.
When I look at our team and that of the USA, I think
we can play better than they can. We do have power and
stamina, but we are unable to show it at the moment.
But we can only get better."
The coach puts the blame on some
of his players, as he feels they haven't all prepared
well individually.
"For a tournament like this
you have to get started full force six weeks ahead,
but not all players have done so. Luckily we're still
alive, but if all players had done what they should
have done then this would not have happened. "
