Sibon: "It had to go in or it would
have been over"
Sunday 10 August 2008
Gerald Sibon was well on the way
to being the schlemiel, because the tall forward was
on the bench despite Roy Makaay being injured and not
starting.
But in the end he was Holland's
hero as he equalized late in the game and kept Holland's
dream alive.
"It was very necessary I put
that one in, because otherwise the story would have
been over very quickly," Sibon said calmly before
the TV-camera's of Dutch TV.
"It had to go in, no matter
what. Urby Emanuelson en Jonathan De Guzman had been
appointed before the game to take the free kicks. I
left it to them but they both seemed hesitant. So I
told them to leave it for me."
Sibon had also seen how Holland
fell apart after a good first 30 minutes.
"I think it all has to do
with the circumstances. You tire quickly and then you're
chasing the game. This heat just eats away at your energy.
It's hard to describe. It's so tough."
