FC Twente gain sensational win over Olympique Marseilles

Thursday 19 February 2009

In the stadium where PSV were knocked out of the Champions League earlier this season FC Twente tonight laid the foundation for something beautiful.

Visiting Olympique Marseilles de Tukkers won 0-1 which brings the round of 16 well within reach.

A few months ago PSV in the Champions League showed how not to play Marseilles.

In the Stade Velodrome the team of then coach Huub Stevens went down 3-0 mainly because they allowed the pacy forwards of Marseilles acres of space.

As a consequence PSV ended fourth in the group, one place behind Marseilles who went on into the UEFA Cup.

It's here they stumbled upon FC Twente tonight.

The men of gentleman coach Steve McClaren have impressed earlier in the tournament by beating Schalke 04 and Racing Santander and in Marseilles they played a lot better than PSV did before.

After 15 minutes Marko Arnautovic came face to face with the French goal keeper Mandanda but the Austrian missed the chance.

Ten minutes later he made up for it by opening the score from a Blaise N'Kufo cross.

Despite the home team vigorously looking for the equalizer Arnautovic' goal would be the decider as Marseilles didn't get any further than a handful of distant shots.

On the other side Twente had two good chances to double the score.

Blaise N'Kufo hit the post with a header and shortly after he failed to finish a great effort by Romano Denneboom.

Still the 0-1 victory over the French league contenders gives FC Twente a great chance to claim a place among the 16 best in the tournament.
