"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Been proud and angry at the same time

Wednesday 03 December 2008

NEC coach Mario Been was happy and proud after Wednesday's victory over Spartak Moscow
(1-2).

Been was angry because of his team going 1-0 down after only three minutes and proud because of his team turning around the game in the crazy last minutes of the game.

"I think we might just celebrate this a little tonight," Been said on Dutch TV.

At first the coach had been a lot less amused though.

"We had a plan for this game, but we could throw it in the bin after only three minutes," Been pointed at the early opener of of Sergei Kovaltshuk.

"And that was only because we did not perform our tasks which was exactly what cost us at Dynamo Zagreb. I was very unhappy t half-time."

The coach from Rotterdam put on forwards Jhonny van Beukering, Collins John and Rutger Worm in the second half.

"We did that to get a result and got it. Looking at the entire game I believe we deserved to win. Beating Spartak Moscow makes me a proud and happy coach."
