"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Mika Väyrynen: "Heerenveen lack matter of factness"

Thursday 06 November 2008

Mika Väyrynen says Heerenveen need more matter of factness and should take an example in his former club PSV.

"Playing offensively is great, but PSV didn't win four consecutive league titles by playing attractive and offensive football. We miss the matter of factness of PSV," Väyrynen says.

"It's time we keep a clean sheet. When I look at our squad I think: look at this. We have so many talented players and could have been top of the league."

The midfielder hopes to may down a good performance on Thursday away to Wolfsburg.

"Against German teams you can not let off at any time. They are very arduous and often strike in the last minutes of the game. We must be very concentrated, but that is one of our problems. We make too many personal mistakes and concede too easily because of it. In Europe you can not afford any mistakes, cause you will be punished immediately."

Väyrynen has a positive outlook on the future, also because of the arrival of the new coach Trond Sollied.

"Sollied is tactically very strong and he dares to take a risk. He showed that against AC Milan when we played with three defenders. Against AZ he let an 18-year-old like Pavel Wojciechowski make his debut. Pavel is young, but he could become a very big player. I think we can go a long way with SC Heerenveen."
