"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Heerenveen fall through in Wolfsburg

Thursday 06 November 2008

After a decent start Heerenveen were completely overrun in the second half and suffered a humbling defeat at the hands of mid-table Bundesliga side Vfl. Wolfsburg: 5-1.

It was the second group game for Heerenveen after they had lost 1-3 at home to AC Milan; a defeat that seemed only natural.

But Wolfsburg, a modest German side, seemed doable in advance, but after the tonight's embarrassing defeat all of Friesland will be wondering just what is doable for their pride in Europe.

Heerenveen started the match well and when Mika Väyrynen opened the score for the team of Trond Sollied after half an hour the sky seemed crystal clear for Heerenveen.

But clouds came within minutes.

Three minutes after Väyrynen's goal Dzeko equalized and another six minutes later Grafite gave the home team the lead.

Shortly after the break Paulo Henrique had a great chance to equalize, but after the Brazilian failed it all went horribly wrong.

Five minutes after Henrique's miss Zvjezdan Misimovic made it 3-1 and within 20 minutes the score had become painful by more German goals from Dzeko and Krzynowek.

It was a match of Heerenveen's biggest ever European defeat (5-1 against Helsingborgs IF in 2007) and it can be called a miracle that it didn't become any worse.

Wolfsburg-Heerenveen 5-1
0-1 31' Väyrynen
1-1 34' Dzeko
2-1 39' Grafite
3-1 53' Misimovic
4-1 60' E. Dzeko
5-1 71' Krzynowek
