Dutch women surprise France
Sunday 15 December 2008
The Dutch national women's team
seem to be making serious progress towards next summer's
European Championship finals in Finland.
On Saturday the ladies of coach
Vera Pauw beat the number 7 of the FIFA ranking, France
0-2 in Compiegne.
Both Dutch goals came in the last
fifteen minutes of the game and were scored by Karin
Stevens (Willem II) and substitute Chantal de Ridder
(AZ).

"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."
