Van Marwijk: "Still very disappointed"
Tuesday, 13 July 2010
The Dutch national football team
have returned to the Netherlands after their very successful
World Cup campaign that ended with losing the final
1-0 to Spain.
Straight after the KLM plain with
the players landed at Schiphol Airport Van Marwijk stepped
unto an improvised stage on the tarmac and addressed
some members of the press. "We haven't really processed
our disappointment yet. When you give away a World Cup
final 3½ minutes from the end, it hurts.
"We were very confident about
the penalties, especially with Stekelenburg being on
such great form. But it's great that we caused such
a stir in Holland and we have given the people a good
time. As only a small nation we can be proud of the
fact that we finished second in the World Cup."
Captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst,
who played his last game as a professional on Sunday,
agreed: "I can not blame anyone for anything. It
just wasn't meant to be. I am proud of the boys and
the staff."
Players and staff will be honored
today with a boat ride through the Amsterdam canals
and a visit to queen Beatrix.
