"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Sneijder: "It's all very simple"

Thursday, 8 July 2010

In fact a World Cup is a very simple thing. In the end two teams remain. "Of those two one will win the final. And that's us," dixit Wesley Sneijder, Holland's little midfield genius;

Sneijder is being named as the player of the tournament. Will he gain any satisfaction from that if Holland were to lose the final: "Stop talking about losing. It makes me very aggressive."

The man who helped Inter win three prizes this year had a dream last night. "That dream was about the final. Who won? What do you think? It was a great game and after the final whistle I was content. I received another drum for the Man of the Match. Hahaha, and when I woke up I was in a canal in Amsterdam."

Holland only once won a big prize, in 1988. Little boy Sneijder was four years old. "I have few memories of it. I only remember standing at the side of the motorway cheering the bus with the players with an orange cap on my head. We are going to outdo those guys."

Sneijder has scored a remarkable amount of goals this tournament. If necessary "off the referee's arse". Is it just good fortune? "No, I don't think so. You have to want to score, enforce it. That's what I do. You have to be 'horny' for that goal. I'm enjoying everyday of this. That helps. It's so great to be out on the pitch here."

According to Sneijder it's never happened that a player has won the league, the cup, the Champions League and the World Cup in one season. "I could be the first one, apparently. Believe, I pay it no mind at all. People have been talking about the Golden Boot. What's that about? I want that golden cup!"

He says he's feeling well. He did give his laptop to his girlfriend two weeks ago. "People say things about me in Holland. It annoyed me. We're human, you know, not machines. Often I get insulted. I know I should shrug it off, but on the inside it hurts. So no computer for me here."

Still he has less trouble dealing with such things than before. "When I get some shit poured over me, I go and sleep for an hour. After that I will not even react. Whatever. Of course it helps that things are going well. Had we already been eliminated I probably would react, or my girlfriend would have."

He wasn't all that impressed with the way Spain won their semifinal against Germany. "A lot had to do with the German approach. When you play like that against Spain, you might as well not play."

"Of course you have to drop back a bit against Spain. Otherwise they will just play you off the pitch. But the Germans overdid it. Then you are without chance immediately."

He played Barcelona a few times this season, and has his plan for the final ready: "We mustn't lose the ball in midfield. And when in possession we have to show we have the guts to take the game to them. When we do that we will succeed in Soccer City."

"And don't think that they aren't worried about us. I got a text message from Sergio Ramos, 'Will you take it easy Wes', it read. 'You've already got three prizes.' That says enough, no?.''
