"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Van Marwijk not happy with performance

Thursday, 24 June 2010

Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk was critical about the display of his team in the match against Cameroon (1-2). "When you win all three of your group games that's good in itself. But I'm not all that happy about today's performance," Van Marwijk said straight after the game.

"In the first half it was okay. During the break I tried to straighten things out, but we started the second half very poorly. If we play like this in the next round we shall not survive. We were sloppy, we were walking backwards and left Cameroon with the impression that there was something in it for them."

"A lot of that had to do with the referee though. We knew in advance that he is quick with yellow cards. My players were informed and were holding back in their challenges. Still we received three cards."

"You could feel the equalizer coming, but in a way that was good for us. It woke us up and after their goal we were on top of the game again. Still we weren't as much in control as were as the other games."

Van Marwijk was happy about the way Robben and Huntelaar came on: "The goal Huntelaar scored wasn't easy. There are plenty of forwards who will miss that chance."
