Van der Wiel: "Let them chase me"
21 June 2010
Ajax-player Gregory van der Wiel
(22) is doing well as a right-back for Holland. Still
unbeaten in every game he has played for Holland he
is getting noticed around the world. Last night BBC
commentator Mark Lawrenson called him one of the best
right-backs in the world, together with Maicon and Dani
Alvez of Brazil. That's a compliment.
He's also a right-back of the same
type as the two Brazilians, often going forward. "The
more the forward has to chase me, the less air he will
have to round me on the other side," Van der Wiel
says. "Let them run after me. That way I
have to defend less and I can create danger up front.
Besides you wear them out that way."
His performance in the game against
Denmark earned him compliments of Johan Cruyff and Wim
van Hanegem. "That was great to hear, but I wasn't
fully satisfied myself. Some little things went wrong.
Towards the end I gave away a throw to the Danes. At
this level that could mean we concede a goal. That can
never happen again."
