Netherlands-Denmark 2-0
Dirk Kuyt: "Good start"
Monday, 14 June 2010
Dirk Kuyt scored the 16th goal
of his international career in a typical Dirk Kuyt fashion,
reacting quicker than two defenders to a ball that bounced
back from the post. "This was good start,"
the Liverpool player told Dutch TV straight after the
game.
"Games like these are never
easy. We are still getting used to the altitude and
that makes you play differently. We knew in advance
we couldn't go full force for 90 minutes. Of course
we've been training at high altitude, but a match is
something different."
"The first half wasn't great,
but after the first goal we did reasonably well. The
ball did play a role as did the pitch. It was very dry
and therefor the ball bounces a lot higher. As the game
progressed we were able to adapt to that a bit better.
We knew we had to be patient. After the first goal there
was more space and so we got more chances."
There had been a lot of discussion
coming up to the World Cup about the so-calledBig
Four (Van Persie, Sneijder , Robben and Van der
Vaart) but after 90 minutes two of these Big Four had
been substituted and Kuyt was on the score sheet.
"That wasn't an issue in the
squad, only in the media. I'm happy I could be of value
to the team today. Everyone can be important at some
point. Today it's me, tomorrow it's someone else.
