Holland: 43 years unbeaten by Denmark
Wednesday, 9 June 2010
It's been almost 43 years that
Holland last lost against Denmark in 90 minutes of football.
The last defeat dates back to October 4, 1967, when
the Danes beat the Netherlands in a qualification game
for the 1968 European Championships. In Copenhagen the
score was 3-2.
Holland have since played seven
games against Denmark, which resulted in five draws
and two Dutch victories. After 90 minutes that is....
Because in the semifinal of the 1992 European Championships
in Sweden the score was 2-2 after 90 minutes, but Denmark
still went on to the final as they were better at the
penalties. The Danes went on to win the title, beatingGermany
in the final.
The first game of the Netherlands
at the World Cup -against the Danes - will kickoff on
Monday at 13h30 in Soccer City, Johannesburg. It's the
30th time the two teams meet. The
score so far is Holland winning 11, drawing 10 and
losing 8 of the previous 29 editions.
Holland technically have a home
game and will thus play in their orange home-jerseys.
Holland usually get a result in
their opening games. The last time they lost the start
of the tournament was in 1938. At that time that meant
instant elimination.
The results of Holland's opening
games
1934 (Milan): Switzerland - Netherlands 3-2,
1938 (Le Havre) Netherlands - Czechoslovakia 2-3,
1974 (Hannover) Netherlands - Uruguay 2-0,
