after Holland got eliminated from the 2006 World
Cup by Portugal. |
When he was in charge of the Dutch
national team he wasn't a fan of Mark van Bommel, but
in his new role as a commentator for a Dutch sports
channel Marco van Basten was full of praise for midfielder
Mark van Bommel after Holland's 2-0 win over Denmark.
"I thought he played very
well," Van Basten said. "People always seem
to think that I consider him a bad player. But that's
rubbish. I look at the football player Van Bommel and
today he was one of the best out there."
"He is strong tactically and
he can play in that holding position very well. I don't
consider him a defender though. Playing against this
Dutch team I would be most bothered by Nigel de Jong."
When Van Basten was at the helm
of the Dutch national team he often criticized Van Bommel,
and would sometimes leave him out of the squad. In October
of 2006 Van Bommel had had enough and said he would
no longer play for the Dutch team as long as Van Basten
would be the manager. He made a swift return after Van
Marwijk took over.
