Van Marwijk: "There was too much euphoria"
Tuesday, 15 June 2010
Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk
was all that unhappy about the mild criticism on his
team after the game against Denmark. "Perhaps there
was a bit too much euphoria," Van Marwijk said
after today's training at Wits University.
"I knew it was going to be
tough against Denmark," Van Marwijk said.
"They're solid opponents who
know us through and through. People were expecting to
just waltz over them. I never expected that."
"Perhaps it is an advantage
that people are a bit less enthusiastic about us. Especially
after our game against Hungary (6-1, df) expectations
were skyrocketing. But what can you do? I could hardly
have asked the boys to take it easy after the second
goal."
Van Marwijk did admit that a weight
had fallen off his shoulders after the game. "This
is what we have been working at for two years. We had
to win the first game. The tournament is only just getting
started."
