how things progress with Robben |
Johan Cruijff is a fan of Arjen
Robben. Cruyff says Holland still have plenty of good
forwards without the now injured Robben. But he adds
that not having Robben on the team makes quite a difference.
"The game against Hungary
showed us that we have an abundance of forwards. It
will be Bert van Marwijk's toughest choice. The fact
that there are now some doubts about Robben doesn't
really change that. There are still many forwards on
offer. But yes, playing with or without Robben is a
big difference."
"I am a fan of Robben because
he always adds a lot of depth to the game. Eljero Elia
does so as well. Your advantage is that the opponent's
defense is always on the back foot when he has the ball.
With those extra 2 yards of space there are more opportunities
for quick combinations. Yet that requires great precision.
But when it comes to precision Robben and Elia are special,
with different qualities than the likes of Dirk Kuyt,
Ibrahim Afellay and Rafael van der Vaart."
Cruyff says that they are great
players with specific qualities. "But contrary
to Robben and Elia they want to have the ball played
into them. That holds the risk that you lock yourself
in as a team. That is why it is so important to create
depth as a team. I'm interested to see how things progress
with Robben. But as I said, we have many forwards, as
we have many possibilities in midfield. So it can go
in many directions. One problem remains the build from
the back. Against Hungary that went all right, because
the team was playing in the enemy half. But such things
are up to the opponent as well; it's a matter of what
they allow you. That is why the depth of Robben is so
important."
