Van Persie: "Some excellent stretches"
26 May 2010
Robin
van Persie underlined his ambition to be Holland's center
forward during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa today
with two goals in a friendly against Mexico (2-1).
"In some stretches of the
game we played excellent," a happy van Persie said
afterwards. The Arsenal forward scored from assists
of Rafael van der Vaart and Ibrahim Afellay. "Both
assists were world class. Then it's not so hard for
me to score."
Van Persie, who was out with an
ankle injury for five months during the past season,
seems to be approaching his top form. "It's going
very well, although I can still feel the intense training
sessions. But that's good, it's how you progress. Next
week we'll push it a bit further."
John Heitinga left the pitch with
a painful cheek, a souvenir from a collision with Alberto
Medina. "We banged our heads together, but that's
part of the game," said the defender, who was happy
about Holland's first half. "We played well then
and made a number of chances."
"After the break we perhaps
got a bit tired. Mexico were the better team then and
after they pulled one back it even got very close."
The former Ajax-player is confident
about the World Cup. "There will be a few more
friendlies and some intense training, but we're ready."
