Engelaar hit hard
Friday 28 May 2010
The news that he would not come
to the World Cup in South Africa has hit him hard. The
PSV-midfielder was told so in a one-on-one with Holland
manager Bert van Marwijk, but half a day later he can
barely remember what was said.
"I can't remember half of
it, I was numbed," Engelaar says.
"When I was called to Van
Marwijk I already knew. Only those who were dropped
were called. He said he had opted for Stijn Schaars,
but that I came very close, I think. But what good is
that? It was quite a blow."
A year ago Engelaar handed in his
fat contract with Schalke 04. He thought with PSV he
would play more and thus have a better chance for the
World Cup. "That was a very import reason, indeed."
He said no to a lucrative deal with Panathinaikos for
the same reason. "At the moment I feel it was all
for nothing. You have a certain goal, but you don't
achieve it. Game over. Two years ago I learned what
a wonderful thing it is to be part of such a tournament
That makes this extra painful."
