Van der Sar: "World Cup title will
hurt a bit"
Friday 14 May 2010
Edwin van der Sar is convinced
Holland will be World Champions. But when it happens
it would hurt him a bit he said. The Manchester United-goal
keeper has opted not to go along to South Africa, but
says he will closely follow the team. "I predict
they will win the tournament, but it will be a stain
on my career when they win it right after I quit."
Van der Sar thinks that bondscoach
Bert van Marwijk has an arsenal of top players at his
disposal. "They all play for a top side and three
of them are in the Champions League final. When they
commit themselves to the team 100% it can be a successful
summer," the 369-year-old said.
"The tournament really starts
once you're in the quarter finals. You must be a bit
lucky with the draw and suspensions. It can all depend
on several things, but when it all works out for you
you can win it. The biggest question will be just how
much they want it," said the goal keeper who was
capped 130 times.
Van der Sar has no regrets about
his decision to quit playing for Holland, but he did
admit he would have to swallow when the cup ends up
in the hands of captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
"To not be there will hurt
a bit, but for the nation it would be an incredible
achievement."
