Van der Vaart: "Maybe it's Dirk Kuyt
we need most of all"
Wednesday 26 May 2010
Rafael
van der Vaart doesn't understand all the fuzz around
the formation of the forward line, he said today. After
Robin van Persie remarked last week that he would like
to see Arjen Robben, Rafael van der Vaart, Wesley Sneijder
and himself up front - and thus putting Dirk Kuyt on
the bench - there's been much ado about it in the Dutch
media.
"It went on to live a life
of it's own," said Van der Vaart. "But all
of us we have only one goal: win the World Cup. And
maybe it's Dirk Kuyt we need most of all for that. We
want to win it any way we can, with the four mentioned
forwards or with four others. We think it's possible."
When Robben, Van der Vaart, Sneijder
and Van Persie all play there seems no place for Kuyt.
"I have to be careful what I say now. By saying
we could play all for I don't mean to talk Kuyt on the
bench. Perhaps he is the player we need most of all
during the tournament. A forward line with these four
forwards is a fine idea. But we don't decide."
Van der Vaart doesn't see Sneijder
as a competitor for a spot in midfield. "That discussion
has been going on for ten years. We will never settle
it. I think it's nonsense. During Euro 2008 against
France and Italy we played some decent games, no? We
were both in the team then," said Van der Vaart.
