"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Arie Haan upsets Portugal

Thursday 16 October 2008

Arie Haan achieved perhaps the biggest upset of the night yesterday when his Albanian national team kept Portugal to a 0-0 draw in Braga.

The Portuguese are now on third place in their group with 5 points from 4 matches.

Denmark are first in the group with 7 from 3, followed by Hungary, the team of Erwin Koeman, with 7 from 4 games.

Koeman beat Malta 1-0 yesterday.

Guus Hiddink and Russia booked an easy 3-0 win over Finland yesterday.

After the 2-1 loss on Saturday at the hands of Germany Hiddink spoke of a little revenge for his team: "We lost to Germany because we didn't play well in the first half. We wanted a revenge for that and we got it. We were focussed from the start although it's a petty we squandered so many good chances."

Russia are now second in their group behind leaders Germany.

Leo Beenhakker would have wished yesterday's match had finished five minutes earlier.

His Polish team were leading 0-1 in Slovakia until in the 86th and the 87th minute two goals by Stanislav Sestak gave the home team the victory.

Poland are now second in their group, two points behind leaders Slovakia.

In the Asian region Pim Verbeek managed a 4-0 win over Qatar with the Australian Socceroos.

Verbeek's team are now first in their group.
