Van der Sar: "He could have given
a penalty"
Thursday 16 October 2008
Edwin van der Sar confessed that
Norway could have been given a penalty in the last seconds
of when Tarik Elyounoussi went down in his penalty area
during last night's World
Cup qualifier against Norway.
"He could have given a penalty,"
Van der Sar said.
No penalty, was the verdict of
referee Konrad Plautz.
"I did touch him, albeit very
lightly. Perhaps he was looking for it a bit too much.
But the ref could have given a penalty. I could then
have stopped it and parted in an even better way,"
Van der Sar joked before he stepped on a private jet
to Manchester.
Van der Sar, who actually resigned
from international football after the last European
Championships, came back for the last two World Cup
qualifiers to help out manager Bert van Marwijk.
"But now it's really been
enough," said the record international.
So the national team will now have
to move on without it's legendary goal keeper.
The last two games with Holland
were number 70 and 71 (of a total of 130) in which Van
der Sar has kept a clean sheet.
