Van Marwijk: "We did well"

Saturday 28 March 2009

For Holland boss Bert van Marwijk the glass was half full after the victory over Scotland.

"Internationally 3-0 is a fine score. We gave away only one real chance and that means you did well."

Still Van Marwijk was critical as well.

"We started at a very low pace. At that point our opponents were still fresh and they kept spaces limited. It made it hard for us to come through and we mad too little use of Arjen Robben. Our build up played it back a lot in stead of looking for our players on the wings up front."

Van Marwijk happy about the performances of Van der Wiel, Robben, Van Bommel and De Jong.

"And I think Sneijder digested his role as a reserve well. He came off the bench in good spirit."

The bondscoach would not accept any congratulations for almost qualifying.

"We made a good step, but we're not there yet. Let's until we are."

"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."
