Nigel de Jong: "I don't yet realize it"
Friday 2 July 2010
Nigel de Jong was one of the unseen
forces of the Netherlands this afternoon in Holland's
historic victory over Brazil. Putting down an incredible
12½ kilometers in ground covered, the holding
midfielder was instrumental in denying Brazil's great
forward line in the second half.
Sadly he stumbled upon his second
yellow card of the tournament (he got his first in the
opening game against Denmark) and will be suspended
for Holland's semifinal encounter with Uruguay or Ghana.
Immediately after the game he
knew the facts but said he was unaware of the impact
of what he and his team mates had just achieved. "I
don't think I am really aware now," De Jong said
on Dutch TV. "That will come later today."
De Jong was unhappy about his
booking. "It was a card for nothing," he said.
"But it's not that important. What is important
is that we win the World Cup. We will not settle for
second or third place."
