"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Uruguay-Netherlands 2-3
De Zeeuw is okay

Tuesday 6 July 2010 - 20h30 CET
Greenpoint Stadium, Cape Town
Referee: Ravshan Irmatov (Uzbekistan)

Demy de Zeeuw was kicked in the face hard after half an hour ion the first half when Martin Caceres tried a bicycle kick on a ball that De Zeeuw was trying to clear with his head. De Zeeuw briefly passed out and had to be replaced at half-time.

Tests in hospital revealed no bone fractures, yet several teeth were pushed inside and had to be stabilized.

Doctors say De Zeeuw can play in the final, but it seems likely Nigel de Jong will assume his place in the team again on Sunday, when Holland play either Spain or Germany for the World Cup.
