"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Uruguay-Netherlands 2-3
Nine facts

Wednesday 7 July 2010

Holland won their sixth consecutive game at the World Cup. Let's look back on the game against Uruguay with nine outstanding facts.

1

After 1974 and 1978 Holland reached the final of a World Cup for the third time. In the history of the World Cup only top nations Brazil, (West-)Germany (both 7 times), Italy (six) and Argentina(four) have played more finals

2

The game against Uruguay was the tenth straight victory for Oranje. Since the goalless draw against Paraguay of 18 November 2009 the team of manager Bert van Marwijk won won four friendlies and six games at the World Cup

3

Holland won all fourteen games of this World Cup campaign: eight qualifiers and six games at the finals. Only Brazil have ever managed to win all games during a World Cup campaign. They did so in 1970 with a team that widely regarded as the best ever team in international competition. .

4

When Giovanni van Bronckhorst sent his shot screaming to the top corner he gave Holland a 1-0 lead for the 22nd time in the 27 games played under Bert van Marwijk. Only once did they concede a 1-0 lead: in September 2008 against Australia (1-2). It was the last and only game Holland have lost with Van Marwijk at the helm.

5

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the sixth player of the Dutch team to score at this World Cup. Wesley Sneijder, Dirk Kuijt, Robin van Persie, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Arjen Robben did so as well. .

6

With his opening goal for Holland Van Bronckhorst became the oldest player ever to score a goal for Holland at a World Cup final. Overall Gio is the fourth oldest player to ever score for Holland. Only Abe Lenstra, Faas Wilkes and Arnold Muhren were older when they scored a goal in orange. It was Van Bronckhorst's 6th goal in his 105th game for the Netherlands

7

Dirk Kuyt played his 34th consecutive game for Holland. Only Roel Wiersma (35 games) and Edwin van der Sar (38) ever put down a longer series of back to back games

8

Substitute Rafael van der Vaart booked his 50th victory in the orange jersey (in 82 games played). Only captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst (105 caps) won more games: 62.

9

With his fifth goal of the tournament Wesley Sneijder put his total for Holland on 19. With that he is now level with the tallies of Robin van Persie and Leen Vente and he has entered the All Time Top 10 of top goal scorers for Holland.
