"Players Uruguay are real fighters"
Monday, 5 July 2010
Of all things the
Celeste will throw at Holland tomorrow, in the
first semifinal of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa,
the Dutch team should be most aware of the fighter mentality
of the Uruguayan team, says Gonzalo Garcia, player Eredivisie
side FC Groningen. The Uruguayan forward stressed that
the team shall do everything necessary to make the homeland
proud.
"The players
are fighters. Uruguayans are a very proud people, it's
hard to imagine," says Garcia who says that the
team are heroes in his country of birth. "The people
are over the moon with the fact that one of the smallest
countries in South America are among the four best countries
in the World Cup."
In the capital Montevideo,
where Garcia was born, it will be an incredible party
when Uruguay manage to beat Holland. "Everyone
will be out on the street," Garcia says.
Uruguay were World
Champions twice, in 1930 and in 1950, and are in the
semifinals for the first time in 40 years.
Garcia (26) doesn't
expect the team of manager Oscar Tabarez to play defensively.
"They only did so in the game against France, but
after that they often played three forwards." As
a big fan of the team Garcia is expecting Uruguay to
win. "Of course we will."
Garcia came through
the ranks at Real Madrid and also has &a Spanish
passport. His homeland of choice are also in the semis,
but Garcia will not have any trouble choosing who he
favors. "I am a Uruguayan. My parents still live
in Spain, but I support Uruguay.
The player who played
on loan for VVV Venlo this past season, will watch the
game with his Brazilian team mate Luciano da Silva.
The Brazilian goal keeper saw his team be knocked out
by Holland in the quarterfinal, but Garcia doesn't expect
his team to follow suit. "It will be tough, but
we have a good chance."
