Van Marwijk reassures Sneijder
Thursday 17 December 2008
Holland boss Bert van Marwijk has
reassured Wesley Sneijder about his position in the
Dutch National Team.
In a TV show last Sunday there
was some hot
debate about Sneijder's position in the squad because
of the midfielder's attitude towards team mates.
"The manager defended me on
TV and on the phone he repeated that he doesn't see
any problems," Sneijder said.
Van Marwijk: "There's been
some commotion and that is why I thought it was necessary
to call Wesley. No, I didn't need to clear the air as
there wasn't any problems to begin with."
Sneijder was happy with Van Marwijk's
explanation. "But it would go too far to say that
nothing has happened. On my request there will be a
meeting with the whole squad in March to talk things
over. Too much has been leaked in the past. And too
often the information was wrong. When the press have
the opportunity to get between the players we don't
even to leave for South Africa. Some things have to
be made clear. I want to go to South Africa with only
one goal and that is to win the World Championship.
So everything needs to be right."

"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."
