"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Clarence Seedorf doubts whether Beckham is good enough

Thursday 13 November 2008

Clarence Seedorf told British TV channel Sky Sports that he is not sure whether David Beckham is still good enough to play for AC Milan.

Beckham will join Seedorf's club AC Milan in January for a few months while the MLS is in recess.

The primary purpose for Beckham to go to Milan is to maintain his fitness so he will not lose his spot in the English national team.

Seedorf said he will welcome Beckham with arms wide open, but also said that he doubts whether Beckham will actually play for Milan.

"I don’t even know if he’ll be able to play for us. I mean the first goal is for him to get fit and in the best shape possible. Training with a club like AC Milan will definitely improve his game even if it’s only from a training point of view. But I don’t know if he’ll play, that’s another thing completely."

He added: "He should focus on his physical state, train as hard as possible in a structure that's one of the best in the world to prepare for games with England which I think is his final goal and that's right.

"2010 is not that far away so he has to work hard and show Capello he's still here. I was in Albania for a friendly match when we found out," he said.

"There was a lot of discussion about Beckham coming an we were all excited about how it would work, how he would fit in. Everyone is excited of course, we're looking forward to it. Personally I will help him out to achieve his goals, knowing that he's a great professional and he'll help us to do the same thing."
