In football there are close relationships
between the two countries, due to the large amount of
quality Danish players that play and have played in
the Netherlands: Soren Lerby, Jesper Olsen, Frank Arnesen,
Ivan Nielsen, Jan Mølby and Jon-Dahl Tomasson
are perhaps the best known of the large contingent Danes
in the Eredivisie. In the Euro 2012 Danish squad four
players play their football in the Eredivisie: Simon
Poulsen (AZ Alkmaar), Lasse Schöne (NEC Nijmegen),
Christian Eriksen (Ajax Amsterdam), Niclas Pedersen
(FC Groningen).
In Denmark the encounter of 22 June 1992
is probably remembered best. The Danes came as tourists
to the EC finals in Sweden, played without pressure
and won the cup. In the semis they knocked a very strong
Holland out on penalties after Marco Van Basten missed
his spot kick.
