Matches between Holland and Ireland have
often been quite spectaculair events. Sometimes only
the outcome was spectaculair, like in 2001 when Ireland,
led by the magnificent Roy Keane kept the Dutch from
qualifying for the World Cup. But in Holland everyone
remembers the 2-3 victory (after being 2-0 down) in
1983 that saw the birth of a succesful new generation
that would go on to win the 1988 European Championships.
At these championships they would again meet the Irish
and beat them again by a very late Wim Kieft - offside
- goal.
