"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,

... Portugal

A remarkably negative record against Portugal. The last (and only) Dutch victory dates back to 1991. The last two encounters ended in miserable defeats for Holland, where especially the one at the WC in Germany was embarrassing for Dutch football. Strange detail in the head to head record is that even though both Holland and Portugal have a long history in European football their first ever encounter took place in 1990.

The all time table:

  M W D L G+ G- P
Netherlands 10 1 3 6 5 12 6
Portugal 10 6 3 1 12 5 21
