"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Van Persie brace beats Chelsea

Sunday 30 November 2008

Although playing one of his less impressive matches Robin van Persie was instrumental for his team on Sunday as his two goals - within a time span of three minutes - gave Arsenal a 1-2 win over Chelsea.

Chelsea will moan about Van Persie being offside almost a meter - he was - but the way the Dutchman was magnificent as was his strike that gave Arsenal a 1-2 lead only three minutes after the equalizer.

The surprising victory revives the chances of Arsene Wenger's team in the race for the league title.

Chelsea fully dominated their opponents in the first 60 minutes of the game but failed to increase the 1-0 lead they got in the first half from an own goal by defender Johan Djourou.

Van Persie's goal came from a clear offside position, but the linesman on that side had shown he wasn't paying attention all the time when in the first half he put his flag up for Salomon Kalou who was clearly onside.

Despite the fact the goal should have been disallowed Van Persie's finish was flawless, lashing the ball past Petr Cech into the top corner with his weaker right foot.

It was Van Persie's hundredth game for Arsenal and he crowned the feat with an also magnificent second goal.

Receiving the ball with his back to goal a bit to the left of the center he turned and put a low drive into the far right corner with his left foot.

Cech got a hand to it, but not enough to keep it from going in.

Chelsea then were completely demoralized by Arsenal's lead and were unable to find to the level of before Van Persie's goals.

With his two goals Van Persie prevented Arsenal from suffering a third consecutive defeat in the league after having lost to Aston Villa and Manchester City.
