Wilfred Bouma sustains serious ankle injury
Sunday 27 July 2008
Wilfred
Bouma
has sustained a serious ankle injury in an Intertoto-match
of his club
Aston
Villa
against Danish
Odense
BK
.
The Dutch international was carried
off just 15 minutes into the game after a heavy challenge
from Odense-player Baye Djiby Fall with what initially
looked like a horrific break.
But says Villa-manager Martin O'Neill
on the club's web
site: "The doctor is back from the hospital and
says it's a dislocation. Thankfully the skin isn't broken,
which is really good news. They've reset it and he's
now in plaster. It's obviously a serious injury to a
player who's been playing exceptionally well - he had
a great, great season last year and he will be missed.
The players are going to visit him tonight and we wish
him all the very best and the injury is a big blow to
us."
Fellow player Nigel Reo-Coker has
backed Wilfred Bouma to come back 'stronger than ever'
after his injury nightmare.
He told AVTV Online: "These thinks
happen in football. It was a horrific incident and when
I saw the injury I was close to tears. I had to move
away. It is awful when it's one of your own teammates.
He's a great guy and my thoughts go out to him and his
family. He will get through this because he is a strong
character - one of the strongest in the dressing room.
He'll come back stronger than ever!"
Aston Villa won the match 1-0 and
after the 2-2 draw in Denmark qualified for the first
round of the UEFA Cup.
