Wilfred Bouma on road to recovery
Friday 09 January 2009
Aston Villa's Wilfred Bouma has
taken his first steps on the comeback trail after nearly
six months out of action with a dislocated ankle.
The 30-year-old left-back has
been sidelined since suffering
the injury against Odense BK in an Intertoto Cup
clash at Villa Park on July 26, but he has now been
able to undergo some running work at Villa's Bodymoor
Heath training complex.
Villa boss Martin O'Neill moved
to plug the gap left by Bouma's absence by signing Nicky
Shorey from Reading a fortnight later.
But the former England defender
has struggled to hold down a first team spot in recent
months with O'Neill preferring to switch Luke Young
from right-back to the opposite flank.
The return of Bouma would be a
timely boost for O'Neill although he is setting no specific
targets for when Bouma may be pushing for a return to
action.
"Wilfred Bouma is making good
progress," said O'Neill.
"He is doing really fine."
"I can't give you a specific
day or date as to when he will be able to return. But
he is doing some running here which is a good sign.
He has not joined in with us as a group of players yet.
That might take a little while - but he is doing fine."
