Hasselbaink calls it a day
Monday 15 September 2008
Jerrel Hasselbaink has put an end
to his professional football career.
The former Holland forward had
a dispute with his club Cardiff City during the summer
months over his contract and worked on his fitness at
Norwich City.
Hasselbaink (36) was part of the
team that surprisingly reached the FA Cup final last
season.
That game, which they lost to Portsmouth,
now turns out to have been his last official game.
The striker thought he would still
be playing for Cardiff this season as he thought his
contract was extended for a year automatically.
The club claimed that that clause
had been canceled some time ago.
Now that no club has shown interest
in the services of Hasselbaink he has decided to quit
professional football all together.
The center forward started his
career at Telstar and from there moved on to AZ.
He then played abroad for Campomaiorense,
Boavista, Leeds United, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Middlesbrough,
Charlton Athletic and Cardiff.
For these clubs he played 492 games,
scoring 218 goals.
Hasselbaink played 23 matches for
Holland in which he scored 9 goals.
