"Ryan Babel on the bench because
of Olympics"
Tuesday 09 December 2008
The fact that Ryan Babel has spent
most Liverpool's matches on the bench is a direct consequence
of the player taking part in the Olympics, Liverpool
manager Rafael Benitez told FC Update.
Babel has expressed his disappointment
regularly in recent weeks about his lack of playing
time at Anfield.
The young forward was counting
on his definitive break through this season, but Benitez
seems to be a bigger fan of the young Spaniard Albert
Riera on the left.
That is mainly because Babel decided
to go to the Olympics in August when the Premier League
had already started.
"Because of that he had a
hard time when he came back and he was having problems
with his fitness a little," Benitez explained.
"Now he reaching a better
form, but Riera has been doing well lately at his position
on the left. That is why things are difficult for Ryan
at the moment. But yes, his current role is a direct
consequence of him playing at the Olympics."
