Edwin van der Sar still on record course
Monday 02 February 2009
Edwin van der Sar could be on the
way to setting a new British record for not conceding
a goal in a league game.
After Saturday's shut out against
Everton Van der Sar has now been unbeaten for 1121 league
minutes and with that he already holds the Premier League
Record and the English league record.
Van der Sar's clean sheet of 1121
minutes beat Reading's Steve Death who kept a clean
sheet for 1,103 minutes in the 1978-79 season.
If Van der Sar can shut out West
Ham for at least 75 minutes next week he will overtake
Chris Woods of Glasgow Rangers and take the British
record beyond 1,196 minutes.
The next record to beat would then
be the European record of Dany Verlinden of Club Brugge
who kept a clean sheet for 1390 minutes between March
and September 1990.
That is still a long time away
from the World Record though, which is held by
Geraldo Pereira de Matos Filho, who did not concede
for 1.816 minutes for his club Vasco da Gama in the
1977/78 season.
