"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Van der Sar does another year

Thursday 11 December 2008

Goal keeper Edwin van der Sar (38) has extended his contract with Manchester United with one more season, his agent Rob Jansen confirmed tonight.

"We started the negotiations for a new deal a few weeks ago. And we have now agreed terms. It is an extension for one season. What happens after that I do not know," Jansen said.

The club will announce the news on Friday.

Van der Sar has been playing for Manchester United since 205.

Before he minded the net at Fulham (four seasons), Juventus (two seasons) and Ajax (nine seasons).

After this summer's European Championship Van der Sar said goodbye to international football with the Dutch national team, although he made an emergency comeback for two World Cup qualifiers this autumn when both of Holland's first choice goal keepers were injured.

Van der Sar is widely regarded as one of the finest goal keepers in the world.

Manchester manager Sir Alex Ferguson called him the "best goal keeper at Manchester since Peter Schmeichel".

Edwin van der Sar won the Champions League twice (with Ajax in 1995 and with Manchester United in 2008) and played four European Championships and three World Cups (although he was second to Ed de Goey in 1994).

He won several league titles and national cups.

In 2007 he was named to the PFA Team of the Year.
