England flop Steve McClaren has
vowed to rebuild his career by getting an "education"
in Dutch football.
Former national manager McClaren, 47, took charge of
FC Twente yesterday and signalled he is not yet finished
at the top level. He is convinced that taking to the continent to broaden
his experience will help fashion a speedy rehabilitation
from his England nightmare. McClaren signed a two-year deal with the club, in the
town of Enschede on the Dutch-German border, and will
face an immediate test of his skills, with a tough qualifier
in August to reach the Champions League group stages. He was sacked in November after the 3-2 defeat by Croatia
ended England's Euro 2008 dream but yesterday McClaren
said: "I hope to continue my education here. "As a coach, I hope to develop. Staying in one country can narrow your mind. I want
to open mine and that's why I am here - and for the
challenge and experience of Dutch football.
"I believe in technical football
and how the Dutch play theirs.
I have always admired it. It's the way I want to play." Some FC Twente fans have opposed his appointment but
he said: "I spoke to Sir Bobby Robson, who said,
'improve your education as a coach, you'll like the
football and the people'
