Cruyff: "Robben better off at Barcelona"
Monday 15 December 2008
In his weekly column Johan Cruyff
will not have made many friends in Spain's capitol as
he stated that Arjen Robben would be better off if he
played for Barcelona in stead of Real Madrid.
The Dutch legend wrote that Real
Madrid's offensive play does not suit a player like
Robben as they often attack without a play and us the
long ball too much.
"They don't use the long ball
from good positional play but they use it in a purely
opportunistic way. It's not good for maintaining possession
and and your positional play can not be executed well
as your lines will be to far apart," Cruyff wrote.
"Barcelona play like I feel
football should be played, with all advantages and disadvantages
that come with it. At Barcelona they play the long ball
five or six times per game the most and when they do
it's always a cross pass."
"That is why I feel Arjen
Robben would be much better off at Barcelona. Just like
is the case with Lionel Messi Barcelona's tactics would
be aimed at Robben performing his runs and dribbles.
Against Zenit I saw him defending near his own back
line a few times. That way you deprive a special player
of what he is best at."
