Van der Vaart scores on debut
Friday 08 August 2008
Rafael van der Vaart is the talk
of the town after his debut match for Real Madrid.
The 25-year-old scored a goal and
had an assist in his first match for the Spanish champions
on Thursday against Colombian outfit Santa Fe (1-2).
Madrid were 1-0 down at half-time
after an uninspired 45 minutes.
But after the introduction in the
second half of Van der Vaart Madrid came to life.
Van der Vaart had a goal ruled
out for handball 10 minutes after his introduction,
but in the 74th minute he materialized his dream debut
when he netted a freekick from about 25 meters out.
Three minutes later Pepe headed
home the Madrid winner from another Van der Vaart freekick.
Madrid had been down to ten from
the 20th minute after Michel Salgado had seen a red
card.
"It has been special,"
Van der Vaart told Madrid's official website.
"Everything that has happened
tonight has been great. The goal and the assist were
just the cherries on the top."
"It is the debut that any
player would dream of having for his new club."
