Van Nistelrooy keeps Madrid alive
Monday 18 August 2008
Thanks to two Ruud van Nistelrooy
goals Madrid can keep on hoping to win the Spanish Supercup.
The Spanish champions lost the
first leg in and against Valencia 3-2; but Ruud's brace
limited the damage for Madrid.
Real-coach Bernd Schuster started
the match with Dutchmen Van Nistelrooy and Rafael van
der Vaart.
Arjen Robben was on the bench,
while Sneijder (injury) and Drenthe (Olympics) were
unavailable.
But even without the Dutch trio
Madrid started well.
Van Nistelrooy opened the score
after fifteen minutes with a typical Ruud-goal, receiving
the ball inside the box, creating some space and firing
home.
After the break (0-1) Madrid fell
back a bit, which allowed Valencia to take the lead
(2-1), but than a completely Dutch attack leveled things
at 2-2.
Robben replaced the not so impressive
Robinho swirled past three defenders and crossed, Van
der Vaart stepped over the ball and Van Nistelrooy left
Hildebrand without a chance.
In the last few minutes of the
game Vicente scored the winner for the home team, but
despite that late goal Madrid have every chance of to
clinch the Cup when they welcome Valencia in their own
Bernabeú Stadium.
