"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Wesley Sneijder scores only goal as Madrid beat Recreativo Huelvo

Sunday 23 November 2008

Real Madrid booked a modest success by beating lowly Recreativo Huelvo 1-0 at home.

The only goal of the game was scored by Wesley Sneijder six minutes before the break when his distant shot was slightly deflected and curved in over the Recreativo Huelvo goal keeper.

Yet it remains to be seen whether the victory has done anything for the position of Real coach Bernd Schuster.

Madrid's play was again poor.

Sneijder and Royston Drenthe were in the starting lineup.

Sneijder was replaced halfway through the second half by Rafael van der Vaart.

Madrid are now second in the Primera Division two points behind Barcelona, who play on Sunday.
